It was during one of my inventory observations when I was an auditor at an accounting firm. I asked about bottles of wine priced in the thousands of dollars and how he knew the bottles were any good. He told me that the wine could have gone bad like immediately because the cork could have come from a bad batch of cork. When I saw some bottles that were listed as very expensive that had screw tops, he told me that there is a movement to store wine in bottles without risking improper preservation due to inconsistent cork. He said that from the standpoint of some consumers, the cork is part of the experience, but from a wine-remaining-good-over-time perspective, well-made screw tops may be the future.
