I pulled out 1A End of a dorm name, usually: HALL because that was not my dorm in college, so it took me a little longer than it should have. While UCSB had a lot of dorms whose name ended that way, I lived in Manzanita Village. I think it had the number of residents of a normal dorm, but what would have been individual floors of a big building were houses of smaller buildings. Each floor-equivalent was 3-4 stories tall. I lived in Jalama House in a single-occupancy room with an ocean view and soundtrack.

64A Some poster-making supplies [2,6]: GLUESTICKS.

46D Like 17-, 26-, 40-, 51- and 64-Across, with respect to the numbers in their clues: RHYMING.

Oh, I just got it.

17A SEVEN NINE KEVIN KLINE
26A EIGHT ONE GREAT FUN
40A FOUR ZERO WAR HERO
51A THREE FIVE FREE DIVE
64A TWO SIX GLUE STICKS

I pulled out 37D Pollution in city skies: SMOG because early in the pandemic, Los Angeles had pretty good air quality, but now even after a heavy rain, the smog comes back really quickly. I’m staying pretty much inside now anyway. Outside is too cold and wet, and omicron, you know? I just found out about yet another friend who has been vaccinated, boosted, and had covid early on who has caught omicron. Like, what is going onnnnnnnnnn. Be safe, plz!

I pulled out 43D 2019 Super Bowl loser, for short: LARAM because it’s not easy to win a championship, but it is easy to get on the field of SoFi Stadium for a holiday party if you’re going to a holiday party on that field. Pics to follow, perhaps.

No theme this Saturday.

I pulled out 51A Brand with a red star in its logo: HEINEKEN because my parents got me a Heineken pour set for my 21st birthday. It came with four glasses and a plastic stick to push the extra foam off the glasses. But thing that stuck out was that they advised to fill the glasses with beer up to the horizontal side of the star on the glass.

More updates to come, but it’s now 1:54 am, and I need to sleep.

I pulled out 50A Deck builder’s tool: NAILER because I have never heard a nail gun called that. Also when building a deck, I recommend screws instead. Now, I’ve never built a deck, but I’ve built other things, and deck screws seem like they’d be way more durable.

This puzzle was shockingly basic for a Saturday.

But I guess when you start out with 1A Popular brand of alcoholic seltzer: WHITECLAW, how can it be anything but?

I like regular seltzer in a few different situations, but seltzer is the best for egg creams and to drink right after eating ice cream.

If you’ve not had an egg cream, you simply gotta.

You mix milk and chocolate syrup together to make chocolate milk. And then you add sparkling water.

There’s no egg involved.

Sounds nasty? It’s not! It’s wonderful.

Not bad for a puzzle entirely completed on my phone while lying in bed this morning. I left one square blank so I could get the completion screenshot on my computer. WordPress gets angry if the screenshot is too small. I know I can take a screenshot on my computer of the image on my phone, but that’s so much work when I’m going to take a screenshot of the grid anyway.

I pulled out 6D “A series of _,” infamous analogy for the internet: TUBES because I shared that with Calah a few months ago or a year and a half ago or yesterday. Who even knows at this point?

“The internet is not something you just dump something on–it’s not a big truck. It’s a series of tubes!”

Shame on me for thinking that nobody cared about that anymore. I’d filled out MEMES instead of TUBES initially. Because at this point, the internet really is just a series of memes.

I was able to solve today’s puzzle by figuring out the theme after solving a couple of the related clues and coming across the clue that unites the theme clues.

17A *Like many old video game soundtracks: EIGHTBIT.
19A *Common purchase for a tailgate: SIXPACK.
26A *Sinbad’s milieu: SEVENSEAS.
41A *Burger chain named for a father and his sons: FIVEGUYS.
54A *One of two for the 1990s Chicago Bulls: THREEPEAT.
63A *Anthem whose French lyrics predate its English lyrics: OCANADA.
66A *Former fashion retailer so-named for its 57th Street address in Manhattan: NINEWEST.

57D: Woman in a 1982 hit who can be reached using the starts of the answers to the starred clues: JENNY.

EIGHT SIX SEVEN FIVE THREE O NINE!

Pro tip for travel: If you go to like a supermarket or drugstore and don’t have a discount card, use ([local area code]) 867-5309. Someone likely has signed up with that number as a joke or as a community service. Either way, go for it.
