NYT Crossword Puzzle 9-4-21 Complete (contains spoilers)

I pulled out 22A Govt. plant inspector: OSHA because I had put USDA there. For a couple years I was on an audit client in El Segundo. Not far from that client was a US Department of Agriculture Plant Inspection Station & Animal Import Center. I’m not saying the clue is wrong because they’re talking plant like concern, but I always kinda hoped to see some lions or whatever being brought to that office while I was on an afternoon walk. I started going on those walks when my pants stopped fitting due to the long days, bad eating habits, and lack of exercise. I never saw lions there, but I did lose some weight.

No theme this puzzle. But it was obscure in a not-fun way. I guessed a lot of this puzzle, and things fit. Not the most fun. The NYTXW has been overall disappointing as of late.

What we found in our Finish Powerball Max in 1 Dishwasher Detergent Tabs

The other day, Calah (my wife) found a Finish dishwasher tab that had been taped up. It was unusual because normally they’re sealed and good.

So I wrote to the Finish folks to tell them what we’d found and to ask how it happened and whether it’s safe to continue to use the items in the container.

They responded by asking for pictures that included the tab and the lot information on the package.

I sent those and asked what had happened and whether or not it was safe to continue to use the items in the box.

They responded by asking for my address so they could send me something.

I gave my address but still wanted to know what had occurred and if it was safe to continue to use the product that was in the box.

They said I’d get something in the mail.

So what did I get in the mail?

A $5 coupon for a Finish product.

Like, OK, but the product at Costco is like $17. And can I even still use the stuff I have?

I’m starting to doubt that they’ll tell me what happened.

I pulled out 42A Show of hands?: CLOSEUPMAGIC because I had written SHADOWPUPPET before realizing that that wasn’t it. It was an unreasonably difficult clue for me to solve. Unreasonably difficult because as of July, I’ve been a magician member of the Magic Castle in Hollywood, and I have more decks of cards than my beautiful wife Calah ever thought she’d see in her life. While I don’t need any more right now, there will be a time when I have to buy more. It’s good that Costco has them in bulk.

No theme on a Friday.

NYT Crossword Puzzle 9-2-21 Complete (contains spoilers)

I pulled out 29A _ dog: CONEY because when I thought of a coney dog, I thought of this:

I didn’t know people called them coney dogs. But I’m not from New York. Wait, hang on, not coney, Coney! It must be a foodlike item. And I just checked, and it is a hot dog with some stuff on it. Is the stuff chili? Maybe! Is it other things? Maybe! I like my hot dogs with grilled onions and barbecue sauce. Never mustard. I don’t like mustard.

The theme of this puzzle was: How to be annoying while also being lame.

60A On and on … or how to read 18-, 27-, 37- and 51-Across to understand this puzzle’s theme?: ENDLESSLY. Gotta cut off the ends of the answers.

18A Fencer’s cry: (Z)ENGARDE(N). En garde! but extended with rando z and n to make zen garden. Now where did I put my tiny rake?
27A Style of diamond with a flat base: (P)ROSECUT(E). Rose cut with an added p and e.

37A Spot for a dinner plate: (S)TABLEMAT(E). Table mat with rando s and e.
51A Roadside restaurant sign: (W)EATHERE(D). Eat here! sign but with rando w and d.

NYT Crossword Puzzle 9-1-21 Complete (contains spoilers)

I pulled out 28A Young newt: EFT because I didn’t know that this was a thing. I went through the puzzle thinking I’d have to fix it later, but I couldn’t imagine what the cross words would be if I’d gotten the answer wrong.

The theme of this puzzle doesn’t have to do with the longest answers or any answers!

19D Exclamation upon seeing this puzzle: THATSABIGIF. Yep, the pattern has a big IF in it.

The long answers were good, though.

3D They can rate up to 350,000 on the Scoville scale: HABANEROPEPPERS. A lot of people write Habañero rather than Habanero because jalapeño is correct and jalapeno isn’t as correct. But Habanero peppers are so called because they’re from Havana, Cuba. They’re not from Havaña, Cuba. So jalapeno is fine, jalapeño is better, Habanero is always correct, and Habañero is NEVER correct.
4D “Nevertheless … look at our current situation”: ANDYETHEREWEARE. It’s a good thing to say in an argument. Try it.
6D Grass-roots group focused on addressing climate change: SUNRISEMOVEMENT. I don’t know how effective they are with donations because Charity Navigator looks at three-year trends.
7D Difficult to understand: BEYONDONESGRASP.
11D Performer known as the “King of Latin Pop”: ENRIQUEIGLASIAS.

How can Enrique Iglesias be made better? By Mr. Worldwide, of course! Now where did I put my Bud Light?
